About Dr. V. Subash Chandra (1954 – 2020)
Vidyashankar Subash Chandra was born on 29th May 1954 in Bangalore, the only child of Shri K. R. Vidyashankar and Mrs. Rukmini originally hailing from Krishnarajapuram, Mysore District. He received his early schooling in Coonoor, Mysore, and Mangalore.
He joined St. John's Medical College, Bangalore, in its 8th batch. He graduated in 1977 and left for the UK to pursue further education, securing his MRCP in 1980. He continued to work in the UK until 1986, at Leeds General Infirmary, specialising in cardiology. He then moved to the Cornell Medical Centre as Attending Physician and underwent further training in interventional cardiology.
Following the untimely demise of his mother in 1990, he returned to India to join the Madras Medical Mission (MMM), where he was instrumental in establishing its Interventional Cardiology unit. He subsequently moved to Bangalore to set up the Manipal Heart Foundation, where he continued to work for several decades, with a brief interlude at Wockhardt Hospital.
Dr. Subash Chandra was widely recognised as an exceptionally skilled, innovative and dynamic cardiologist. He was generous in sharing his knowledge and skills with innumerable students and colleagues. His competent and compassionate care gave a second lease of life to countless patients for over three decades.
An erudite, generous and well-spoken gentleman, he was a humanitarian who served life with dignity. He was multifaceted with wide-ranging interests in wildlife, bird watching, photography, cars, and poetry.
He passed away on July 06th 2020, surrounded by family and friends.
